6th Gen Camaro Seat Wiring - Installing Powered 2SS Seats
So you’ve just swapped your standard cloth interior for a set of fully loaded 6th Gen Camaro Leather Seats. It is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to the 2016+ Camaro interior. But, you’ve hit a snag. You bolted them in, plugged them in, and went to adjust the seat... and nothing happened.
Don't panic—the seats aren't broken. If you are upgrading from a 1LT, 2LT, or 1SS trim, your car is just missing one specific wire. This guide will walk you through exactly how to power up the memory module so you can enjoy your new interior.
Tools & Materials Required
Before you start, gather these essentials. You won't need all of them depending on which method you choose, but having them ready makes the job easier.
The Essentials:
- Multimeter or Test Light: Crucial for verifying your power source.
- Add-a-Circuit (Fuse Tap): To pull power from the fuse box cleanly.
- Primary Wire (16-18 AWG): To run the signal to the seat.
- Wire Strippers & Crimpers.
- Plastic Trim Removal Tool.
Specific Tools:
- For Method 1: A precision pick tool (to unlock the factory connector).
- For Method 2: T-Tap connectors.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Voltage Sensitivity
READ THIS BEFORE TESTING YOUR SEATS
The Memory Seat Module (the computer box located under the driver's seat) is strictly designed to operate on a 12V Automotive electrical system.
Do NOT connect this module to any power source other than a standard 12V car battery.
- No Power Tool Batteries: Never use tool batteries (especially 14/16/18v) to bench test these seats.
- No Unregulated Adapters: Do not use random household power bricks.
The Technical Breakdown: Why This Happens
While all 2016+ Camaros come pre-wired for a basic power driver seat, the harness wiring varies by trim level.
- The Relay Box: The fully loaded 2SS seats utilize a memory control module. Even if you don't intend to use the memory buttons on the door panel, this box acts as the "gatekeeper" for the seat motors.
- The Power Requirement: This box needs a specific "wake up" signal. Without power to this computer, the relays won't fire, and the motors won't move.
- The Missing Pin: If your Camaro is a lower trim, your floor harness is likely missing Pin #24. You'll know it's the right one if it's the thinner Red/White wire on the floor-side pig-tail. The larger Red/White wire is it's bigger brother, the main power feed!
The Golden Rule: Accessory Power Only
Because Pin 24 powers a computer module, you must be careful where you source your electricity.
DO NOT use constant power.
You must connect this wire to an Accessory or Ignition-Only power supply (a fuse that turns off when the car is off).
If you connect Pin 24 to a constant 12V source, the seat computer will stay awake 24/7. This creates a parasitic draw that will drain your battery overnight.
The Solution: Two Ways to Power Pin 24
We have two ways to tackle this. Choose the method that matches your comfort level with automotive wiring.
Option 1: The "OEM" Style (Add a Pin)
Best for: A clean, factory-finish look.
This method involves adding the missing pin directly into your car's floor-side harness.
Disassembling The Connector
The purple plastic is the locking mechanism which holds in the white plastic pin cover. Release the purple lock, then slide the pin cover out of the connector.
Adding The New Pin To The Old Connector
If you purchased your seats from us, we’ve included a floor-side pigtail with your purchase. Repeat this process on the included connector and remove pin #24. Use the precision pick-tool to release the wire. Pay attention to the orientation - these pins can only go in one way.
Push the new wire into the original connector, you'll feel it click in when it's in the correct orientation. Replace the pin-cover to ensure perfect pin alignment. Reset the purple lock, and you're good to go!
Option 2: The "Bypass" Style (Seat-Side Intercept)
Best for: A faster install without de-pinning plugs.
If you aren't comfortable taking apart factory connectors, you can intercept the wire on the seat itself.
- Locate the Wire: Find the wire corresponding to Pin 24 on the seat-side harness.
- Intercept: Use a T-Tap connector to tap into this wire.
- Connect: Feed power into the T-Tap from your separate ignition-switched circuit. You can use a simple 1-wire quick-disconnect type fitting to allow easy removal of your seats in the future.
Summary
Upgrading to 2SS seats is a massive improvement, and with just one extra wire, you can unlock their full functionality. Remember: Watch your voltage, use ignition-only power, and take your time with the wiring.
